I would feel very uncomfortable looking out my front window with a scary looking Tiki staring at me! Of course, you could have a staring contest, but I think you'll lose!  HaHa!  Maybe the Tiki is guarding the pond that flows below the rock pile.

You will notice a difference in the pictures today.  First of all, I was walking on the WINDWARD side of the Island.  Also, I walked in the late afternoon.  The light and views gives a different feel and due to the lateness of the start, I didn't walk as far strolling only 2.56 miles.

An opportunity presented itself making Kailua a possibility for today.  Thinking that Kailua is mostly FLAT, I thought that today would be easy, but, Keolu sits in a basin, and I was walking on the rim.  So, it was harder than normal, but manageable.

With the sun dipping low on the Ko'olau ridge line, the light casts long shadows and cooler temperatures.  The craggy walls of the mountain range is beautiful to behold.



Do you need directions in Kailua?  This resident is sharing his ALOHA by helping you to get where you need to go!  (Hell wasn't there!  HaHa!)  I loved the COLORFUL signs!

Making use of leftover fencing material?  Well, its a bargain price and it matches the house, yes?

What was fascinating with this mailbox was the rich colors, the accurate depiction of RED GINGER and that it matched perfectly with their yard, which had the exact same colored gingers growing profusely!  Sorry!  I should have taken a picture with the mailbox and the yard so that you could see the similarities.

Called "Lakeside," huffing up the drive with rows of townhouses, I could see why they call it that!  Each townhouse had a wrap-around lanai facing the Kaelepulu Pond.  With the tradewinds lightly blowing, and the blue of sky and water, it sure must feel like heaven here!

You didn't see enough mailboxes yet, did you?  HaHa!  Sorry!  Today, I'm all enamored with mailboxes!  The cerulean blue of this tsunami(?) was so rich that I saw the mailbox way before I came upon it!  Are you enamored with anything today?  Hawaii no ka 'oi! (Hawaii is the best!)

Ka-POW!  The intense color shot my eyeballs out!  Nah!  But the combination of cloudy skies and the recent rain produced this vibrant hibiscus!

Sorry for taking the picture with the binder ring in the middle, but it saves space for other pictures.  With sodden, clingy clothes, I said "Uncle" to the weather and ended my walk at 2.04 miles.  Following the Kawainui canal, I smelt the ocean before even seeing it.  This part of Kailua called, Kalaheo, is an area I'm not familiar with and the nearness of the ocean surprised me!

The entrance to this house may have been a driveway leading to a garage previously, but what really got my attention is that there are two doors you need to go through to get inside the house.  Why did they do that?  A mystery!  What do you think?

In a previous blog, I showed you a picture of a "fire hydrant" hose organizer.  This must be the Hawaiian style hose organizer made of lava rock to loop around for anchoring.

Placed upon a rock paver, I almost missed this unique miniature home.  The details where intricate and elaborate!

 

Is this legal?  I'm not sure, but I know that access to the beach is not to be blocked and the beach is accessible to everyone!  Maybe the two neighbors bought the land between and then blocked it.

 

Once you've seen a coconut tree steel ring, you've seen them all, but this one has a HULA dancer on it!  My immediate favorite!  See or do one of your FAVORITE things today!  Enjoy!  E Malama Pono!  (Take good care!)

When I saw this, I wanted to hop into a canoe and paddle through.  The gentle tradewinds and the glassy waters looked so inviting!  Actually this is part of the drainage canal from Kaelepulu Pond which continues to Kailua Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  I call this area "Keolu," even though it is part of Kailua.

Yes, I know that 2.20 miles is not a long stretch of walking, but I visited my Auntie who lives in this area for a spell.  Sorry, people matter more than keeping to a program.  I can always continue my journey on another day.

I have never seen so much "Noni" in a concentrated area!  Also known as  "Indian Mulberry," Pacific Islanders have always known that it possesses medicinal properties.  The fruit contains the ingredient "morindin," which if eaten can lower cholesterol levels.  Unfortunately, ripe fruit smells and tastes nauseating!  The roots were used as red and yellow dyes for the ancient Hawaiians.  Mashed fruit was used to kill "Uku!"(head lice)

This mailbox has me totally confused!  First of all, what is the WOOD thing next to it?  Then, what is that writing down the front of it?  Japanese? Chinese?  What does it mean?  Lastly, the mailbox is in the shape of a barn.  Have you ever seen a BLUE barn?  In my experience, they are RED!

I loved these gardens!  I wonder if it rains, does the first picture "wheel" turn when water flows over it?  That would be fascinating to see!  The second picture was full of Hawaiian plants!  The aloe, taro and red ti leaf plants with lava rock and angel to add interest made for beautiful composition!

It took a double take to realize that these "plants" are part of the fence!  Made out of metal and replicas of the traveling palm, red ti leaf and short aloe, the resident's creativity impressed me!  Hoping that your creativity will inspire you to make something impressive too!  Malama pono!
