Okay, maybe there is nothing illegal with the freedom of expression on the back of this truck, but, if I were a policeman, I would be watching this vehicle pretty closely.
As promised, a walk in Kalihi tallied 3.54 miles today and several inaccuracies in the street map. Checking my written route, the copy of the map and my GPS program, I realized that my GPS was the most accurate. Very frustrating when I had an appointment to get to and having to re-route to get there. Oh well, just one of those days! The week totaled at 15.63 miles and the grand total comes to 358.52 miles!
Walking through a residential area, the mix of old and new, low income and huge edifaces, it kind of reminds me of the ethnic mix here in Hawaii. Living peacefully in a ever crowded Island, thank goodness for the calming winds and tropical beauty to promote harmony.
Also as promised, this is the map of O'ahu with the completed areas highlighted. I actually go by map pages, so I have done more than this, but five areas still has portions to be completed. I know that this doesn't look like much, but remember that the whole Island does not have streets. The parts that do are pretty condensed with streets, especially Honolulu. Patience and perserverance will get this done! Anyway, I'll show what I have done from time to time.
Some businesses of note! The first makes ono(delicious) crackers and the second makes unique mu'u mu'u's(loose gowns) . So if you are hungry or need a special mu'u mu'u(loose gown), this is the place.
Even though I can't name these flowers, the periwinkle color was soothing to look at!
The black color of the truck made the flame detailing really stand out. Standing in the middle of the road to take the picture, I'm sure that drivers must have thought that I was NUTS! Well, that was how I could get the best angle for the picture! Have a safe weekend! Aloha!(Bye!)
A table for one? In the middle of their front yard, this set table with flowers, fruit and coffee is set for who? For God? For a deceased loved one? For a missing loved one? For a POW/MIA? Maybe its set for a religious holiday? Does anybody think they know what this is? Let me know!
By doing 2.49 miles, I have completed the Pearlridge area, mauka(towards the mountain) side. Though not dense with streets, the climbs and descents were arduous. Still, its nice to complete an area and move on. The area I did today was close to the H-1 Freeway, and the traffic sounds were definitely audible. I wouldn't call it a "peaceful" place to live.
From afar, it looked like an ODD shaped rock, but as I came closer, I realized that it was an HORNED LIZARD on the rock. I especially liked the shadow play which brought out the detailed scales of the lizard.
Have you heard of the expression, "Keeping all your ducks in a row?" Well, here it is, folks! I guess that this resident likes to be organized!
Bumpy and full of puka's(holes), I guess this must be artistic expression. Why do I keep thinking, "Swiss Cheese!" Maybe I was hungry at the time.
Called the "paperbark" tree, its durable wood can be used for fuel, posts and shipbuilding. The oil expressed from the leaves have medicinal uses.
Seen between two homes on the ridge, I know that there will be a lot more walking waiting ewa(west) for me. I'm hoping for a little respite from streets that snake up the mountain ridges, even though I know that makes me stronger.
Tomorrow, I have business in Kalihi, so that is where I'll walk. Have a relaxing day! A Hui Hou!(Until we meet again!)
I was baffled by the reason of this fence on the tiny square of grass next to the sidewalk. Maybe its a graveyard for grasshoppers, snails and worms! No headstones though! HaHa!
Viewing torrential rain in the mountains this morning, I wasn't keen on walking there, but to finish up this area, I convinced myself to do it anyway! To my surprise, most of my walk needed the umbrella for bright sunlight, instead of rain. And I so love to photograph plants after rain, because their colors become so rich and they are PERKY!
I didn't know it, but, Iho Place and Palula way are on the other side of the ridge as well as the other side of the golf course. The views here were also fantastic! Though not large in number, 2.69 miles trekked here consisted of steep inclines and declines.
Kaonohi Street can literally take your breath away! Check out the view, though! Sweet!
Coming across this bunch of palms called, "Horse's tail," all I could think of was "The Beatles!" Yes, Donna thinks weird things! Might have been due to the lack of oxygen! HaHa!
I told you! Here is the B and the Ridgeway C condos. I showed you the "D" Ridgeway a couple blogs ago. I have yet to find the "A" Ridgeway, but, I'm not finished yet!
Sights that bring joy to my eyes! Though I'm ignorant as to what they are called, I believe they are from the bromiliad family?! What do you think?
Hmmm? Using a 100lb GP bomb as a mailbox post? Patriotic colors, yes, warmonger, maybe! Do you happen to have a handy bomb when you need a mail post?
These majestic views came from the two sides of Iho Place. The east side is the first picture and the west side is the second. For a condo, the price and the views are a good investment! Invest in something good today, okay? E malama pono!(Take good care!)
Yes, folks! That's exactly how I feel! I deleted ALL my pictures for today with one click of a computer key. E kala mai ia'u!(I'm sorry!) So, I decided to send a few photos of my performance and sights from the Urban Garden Center on "Peace Day." The above photo is a part of the dance where I'm jumping up and down because of the HOT ROCKS while I'm picking lipoa(seaweed). Double click the photo if you really want to see my shocked look! HaHa!
Another surfing trip for my daughter entailed walking in Waikiki again. Trying to get all the streets in the big square I walked previously, I garnered 3.61 miles and lots of pictures that got deleted! Maybe sometime in the future, I'll try to take the pictures again and post a special "hana hou"(again) blog on a Saturday.
Here's a few more shots of me dancing for "Peace Day." I danced a total of 5 songs and had so much fun with my hula sisters.
Aptly named, it's called, "Ram's Horn" bush.
Named the "Calabash" tree, check out the gourds on the ground! Think calabash bowls or how about cutting it in half and it could be the top part of a hula outfit! (No thank you, I'm not wearing that!)
Have you ever seen BLACK bamboo? Besides the green variety, I've seen gold/yellow bamboo and both black and gold bamboo is pretty $$$$$ EXPENSIVE!
Here is the answer to the identification of this plant, posted in a previous blog, but can you read it??? I think it says, "No Antea Guianensia, Red Pepper Vine." What do you think?
Again, my apologies for today's blog! Tomorrow is another day! Have a great one! Aloha,(bye and love) from "The Walking Hawaiian!"
There is a reason why it is called, "Pearlridge!" Condominiums line the lower section of Kaonohi Street. The condos on the Ewa(west) side of the road sits on the precipice of the ridgeline. Therefore, they are aptly named...
Yes, Ridgeway D! There has to be an A, B, and C too! The views from this side of the road is amazing!
I finally decided that since I finished the top of this road, I might as well complete the rest of it! I should be done with it this week. Please be patient as I may be jumping to Waikiki and Kalihi in addition. Sometimes, I've got business to do and to expedite, I walk where I'm at!
Looking at the map, you can see that the Koko head(east) side of the road is all "golf course!" There is a line of condos snaking up Kaonohi from this side too. Obviously, they are called...
Yup, they have "golf" names! Even though most residents don't do much to individualize their condo, some impressed me!
Wow! There's a JUNGLE in front of their home! The other neighbor loves FLOWERS!
This neighbor decided to let the fruit fall into the net, and not the ground! Double click to see the detail!
One of the pitfalls of living close to a golf course! I'm sure that they must of had some problems previously to put up such an extensive fence/net! (I had my umbrella open just in case! HaHa!)
Good news, folks! Previously, I posted this impressive flower with no clue to it's identity. I found out that this is a "Gloriosa Lily!" So Pat, you were right!
I have also discovered that this is a "Red Tower Ginger" plant.
This unique and beautiful hibiscus is called, "Princess Michiko" hibiscus! I love being able to solve a few mysteries that left me in awe and dumbstruck! Hoping you solve a few mysteries yourself! E Malama Pono!(Take care!)
In season for blooming and seeding, I am flabbergasted as to it's identity. Is it edible fruit or seed? Can it be a blooming tree? Please let me know if you recognize it! Anyway, the bloom was a pretty pinkish green. The seeds were a bright red on a black cone. First time ever seeing something like this!
With an ulterior motive to finish a page of map, though I wanted to take a break from the heights, I wanted more to finish a map page and by doing the top of the next ridge, that's all I needed! I managed to complete 2.64 miles for today and ending the week with 13.56 miles for the grand total of 342.89 miles since the start of my blog.
I'm going to try to show you a map of the Island of Oahu with the areas of completion highlighted in yellow by the end of next week. It may look very small, but you know how many miles I walked to complete that. In addition, there are 5 pages of map that are partially finished, but I'm not going to highlight it until it is finished.
What's going on today??? Was it, "Hate the Mailman" with our mailboxes? Why, you say?? Well, a dog is the mailman's nemesis, and this resident got the DOG sitting on the mailbox LOOKING at him! I wonder if it BARKS while he's putting the mail in!
Yes, let's chomp off the mailman's hand while he's delivering the mail with this ALLIGATOR mailbox!
Then, we have the PUZZLE box mailbox! How does it open? Where do you put the mail? The mailman is probably saying to himself, "Now what!"
Thank goodness for the mailboxes that are nice to the mailman, like this BARN mailbox. Highly visible in vibrant red with the additional slot incorporated in the design for the paper. I like that the roof of the barn matches the house! Must have had some spare shingles!
Though I walked only 2.64 miles, it wasn't EASY miles! I walked up from the bottom of this road and it was only a tiny section of my walk.
Wow! Have you ever seen palm trees with RED trunks? Not me! The resident had three bunches of these gracing his sidewalk.
So, would you call this color a dirty taupe, a faded violet or just plain brown? Not the most pleasing color of hibiscus to behold, but absolutely the most unusual! Have a most unusual weekend! Don't forget my hula performance at the Urban Gardens in Pearl City on Sunday (Sept.23rd) at 2:00pm! Aloha!(Bye!)
