Peeking at me as I passed by the zoo, this is the ONLY animal that I could see without actually being in the zoo!

By my statement above, you may have surmised that I am not walking in Kalihi!  Yes, my daughter wanted to go surfing today, so Kapahulu is the area that I trod 3.84 miles.  By the way, did you know that Kapahulu Avenue used to be a stream?  * Public service announcement!  Half of all the zoo parking is now under construction, so plan to park elsewhere, my friends, at least in the near future!

A most interesting little tree decorated with Mardi Gras beads, wind chimes, birds, faux-flowers, faux-leaves and pin-wheels.  I was thinking how Hawaii has such a mixture of cultures and nationalities, just like the tree's mixture!  Please double click the picture to see the details!

At first, I thought that this was a church!  Why, you say?  Because of the square tower jutting out of the middle of the roof!  I expected to see a bell there!  HaHa!  This home, built by Charles Martin in 1898 is an example of Midwest Rural Fok architecture and is the only house of its kind in Hawaii.

Well, I have to say that it is appropriate to have a hose connected to this!  Now, just where did this resident get a hold of a fire hydrant?  I bet it's heavy!

Sometimes," the walking Hawaiian" has got to slow down and smell the "pikake!"  You could call it the Hawaiian rose!  The reason I was so "nosy," was this pikake is pink!  I've never seen a pink one before!  I may be ignorant, but I have only seen white pikake before this!  Anyway, slow down folks, and enjoy the little things that come your way today and everyday!  E Malama Pono! (Take good care!)

Only as "the walking Hawaiian" can I find treasures least expected.  A tiny side street called, "Owen," contained this beautiful mural of the mountains and the ocean.  I think that the cascades are lava, but, you judge for yourself.  I especially love the undersea coral and fishes.  Please double click the picture to see the details!

As you can see, I'm still in Kalihi trying to complete areas.  This makes for a lot of backtracking, but that's just how it is sometimes.  I found out that several streets were missing, but still was able to walk 3.28 miles for the day.

I didn't think that I was hungry until I passed by this place!  There's nothing better than smelling fresh, baked bread.  I inquired if they still conduct tours of the facility, but alas, not for many years.  As a keiki (child) I remember touring with my schoolmates and getting to eat a sample at the end.  Well, they do have a store if you would like to buy Hawaii's own bread, fresh from the line!

Off of King street, I noticed this short road perpendicular to King called, Kamehameha IV.  I saw in the distance telephone poles perfectly in line with this street, that was obviously transected by  the H-1 freeway.  Streets and communities are frequently cut in pieces in Hawaii to make way for progress!

Here is the Kalihi-Palama Bus Facility, where "town" routes originate.  I loved the flower bedecked walls with the windows peeking out from it.  The bottom picture is a close-up view of the blooming flora.  Can't say that I know what it is, do you know?

I guess that the bizarre is quite attractive to me!  This addition to a gated fence fascinated me.  The colors and the puka's (holes) made interesting designs as well as shadows.  Please double click to see what the colors actually are.  Keep looking for things to fascinate you today!  A Hui Hou! (Until we meet again!)

Well, someone is definitely getting"driven up the wall!"  HaHa!  Actually displayed in "Surf Line Hawaii,"  vertical space usually goes to waste, but not in this store!  Check out the unique and varied items on the corner of Kalani and Pu'uhale in Kalihi, you won't be disappointed!

Plugging more puka's (holes) in Kalihi, today garnered a blistering 4.68 miles by zig-zagging and backtracking, but it was gratifying to complete an area.

Spring is showing off vibrant colored flowers!  These two hibiscus is only a tiny example of the beauty I passed today.

I don't know how the dog got on the garage roof, but he sure didn't like me being near and taking it's picture.  The second photo is part of the Christmas decorations.  Maybe its a "guard-dog" for Santa! HaHa!

In Hawaii, there are numerous one-way streets, and you can easily miss the sign indicating the direction.  Obviously, many drivers must do so on this street.  Please double click the photo to see the opinion stated below the sign saying, "wrong way!"  It made me let out a little chuckle!  Laugh and enjoy your day!  Aloha! (Bye, bye!)

For those of you who didn't know that there is an obelisk in Hawaii, here it is!  Located off of Nimitz Highway and Dan K.Inouye Dr.(Senator who recently passed away), it stands in remembrance of comrades who gave up their lives for our country.

Yes, I know that I'm jumping around getting you disoriented, but I'm still in the mode of filling puka's (holes).  So back to Kalihi I go!  I was able to trek 4.98 miles of treacherous walking close to speeding traffic.  My bright yellow shirt came in handy today.  Unfortunately, either the truck drivers were liking my shirt, or they wanted to scare me and see me jump as many blared their horn at me!

Never seeing a fruit or seed like this before, I'm hoping that one of my fellow readers can enlighten me.  Does anyone know what this is?

Any spare tires lying about and you don't know what to do with it?  Paint it and fill with dirt and voila, a plant holder!  Mine is still around my waist!  HaHa!

One of the two major bus depots, the Kalihi Transit Bus Center is a large transfer station as well as the place where OTS bus drivers start work!

I know that it's been far and few showing the beautiful flowers of Hawaii, so here are the "3 amigos!"  Nah, nah!  But their vibrant color made me smile!  I think that spring is in the air!  Malama pono!(Take care!)
