Having the lava rock as a background brought out the red in the Red Ginger plant. Not a fragrant blossom, but, it does last a longggggg time as cuttings in a flower arrangement.
Do you have a yard? Then hele (come) on to this business! Not only do they have all you need to decorate your yard, they also hold weekend classes. This Saturday is "Orchid growing." Next week is "Container plants." Plants, pavers, fences, pottery, water features, they have it all.
If you ever go furniture shopping in Hawaii, and think to yourself that the selection is limited, well, here is the answer. Check out the sign! Quite a little monopoly, don't you think?
First of all, the sign was unusual. Maybe to get people's attention? I'm not sure if you can visualize the distance of how far back this park goes. It's very skinny and situated in a depression, and hard to find if you're not looking for it.
Yummy! This gem is kind of hidden, but, you will love their pastries. Fresh and thick homemade crusts with generous fillings to satisfy your sweet tooth. Their hours are from 6:00a.m. to 1:00p.m., so get there early! The pretty girl helping me was so shy, she hid when I took the picture.
The temptation was too much! I had to go shopping after my walk! By the way, can someone tell me why Japanese tourists take pictures in front of this symbol? Is it something important to them?
I can't wait till this idea comes to fruition! Screen panels secured away from the walls of the Target store have climbing vines growing on them. Imagine it full of greenery and maybe flowers! Now, that's how you decorate a wall! Well done, Target!
Don't tell me how lazy I was today! You're right! After yesterday's underestimate of how far the walk would be, I figured an EASY day was well earned. You could call it a "sloth day!" At only 2.68 miles, I had lots of fun shopping at Target after! HaHa! A Hui Hou! (until we meet again!)

As per request of my blogger follower, here is the ocean, actually Keehi Lagoon. I'm looking mauka (towards the mountain) from Lagoon Dr. Another beautiful day in Hawaii.
NOTE: Please don't forget to double click the image to see a larger view of the picture!

Cars, cars, and more cars! Rental agencies, rental car sales and WHAT IS THAT? Branch parts stuck in the chain link fence? Is this a decoration? Are they just lazy to take it out? There's not too many trees around there, so, how did it get there?
A host of aviation agencies not related to passenger travel. All can be found down Lagoon Dr.
Seaplane travel is another alternative. A different take-off and landing. By the way, when the seaplane landed, the crew was busy cleaning all the windows. I guess there is a lot of salt spray involved with this type of travel.
A huge JAL plane was landing when I walked to the end of Lagoon Dr. The Japanese tourists really help the Hawaii economy with their generous spending! $$$$
This walk was mostly industrial, so, plants were far and in between. In this shot, I spied a bougainvillea with a hibiscus bush intertwined together. It must be true love, because both plants are doing quite well! HaHa!
I've just got to be insane! Well, I estimated that this route is about 4 miles, but, was I wrong! The completed route was 6.85 miles! The sun was beating on me and the wind was trying to rip my umbrella from my hands. I think by the end, I was close to a crawl. Okay, I think I better hone my math skills for tomorrow and ease up a bit. Besides being followed by "Airport Security," it still was very beautiful to see the ocean and the mountains at the same time.
Yes, you can see Diamond Head from Lagoon Dr. A special note! When the moon is full (like now!) check it out on this road. The water is lit up and is gorgeous to see!

Magenta! A definite addition to my "beautiful Hibiscus" list!
I heard it, before I saw it. There is a water fountain feature next to the left stork. So tranquil!
As it rained heavily before I walked today, the blossoms were nourished and perky! I smelled these Gardenias a long way till I finally found the source.
The clock/weather vane greets you as you walk up the steps to the front door. Obviously, we have the tradewinds, since it comes from the easterly direction.
Even graffitti can look beautiful. I'm not sure if this is part of a tag or taggers added to the mural.
If you think that the map looks confusing, you should have seen how confused I was walking today. Thank goodness for my notes and my own map. I walked a convoluting 4.27 miles today and will welcome the weekend to rest my weary feet.
Since tomorrow is "Kodomo No Hi" day (Children's day),a Japanese tradition dedicated to health and strength of all children, I'm posting the celebration poles with the swimming carp today. Carp are noted for their strength swimming against the tide. Each carp is representative. The black one is the father, the red is the mother, and all others are the number of children they have. Have a great weekend!

I loved the richness of the color on this Bougainvillea bush. It actually was in an arch over the driveway.
Salt Lake Blvd., it goes a long way! This is only a portion of it. Parts of it can be very scenic, but, you must watch your speed because the police like to hide out over here and they ALWAYS catch someone.
This Samoan church stands right off Salt Lake Blvd., and I love to see the colorful, traditional garb the women wear.
Margaritas anyone? How about "Key Lime Pie?" Limeade? All I know is that this tree is HUGE, and totally full of limes!
Only Hawaii can make a warning statement cute and serious at the same time. This is etched near a drainage hole.
What? Green and yellow chain link fence? Whatever happened to silver? The second picture is a spiral staircase with platters of rocks on the steps with two tiki torches finishing the top. A very interesting combination!
The good news is, 4.01 miles are starting to get easier. Progress! Sorry about the two maps, but, it was necessary for today's jaunt. The weather has been so favorable for walking, I'm feeling very blessed.
Having such a variety of cultures in Hawaii, we get unusual plants that may be a standard item from where they came from. This is either a pea or a bean plant. Can you imagine serving purple pea soup or purple refried beans? Well, I'd eat it, because purple is my favorite color! A Hui Hou!

Ya-hooo! Here is the official "The Walking Hawaiian" logo! My blog URL is by the bottom foot. I start wearing it tomorrow. No more weird looks as I walk in dead-ends. Of course, I'm sure that this identification will not hinder any BARKING DOGS! Well, at least I don't have to look over my shoulders for police vehicles following me!. HaHa!
Yesterday, it was the unique, Koa pen, today, I got a pen that has a spring loaded 2 year calendar! You have to hold it out to check the calendar, then, when you let go, it disapears back into the pen! I got it at "CeleBRAHtee Shirts, " where I picked up my printed shirts. I think that they did a great job! Check them out if you need printed T-shirts!
At the "Salt Lake Shopping Center," where all the conviences are located, like a gas station, grocery store, restuarants, bank, drug store and McDonalds, why do you need to go anywhere else? This was my starting point for today, and I had to resist the urge to shop.
The mailman might have problems if this mailbox drives away! Maybe the dogs will chase it and leave the mailman alone! HaHa!
Would you like to drive down this driveway and screech to a halt, and then back up all the way up the driveway to get out? Not on your life (and mine!) I don't even think I would like to walk it!
Both of these pictures are from the same yard. The detail and creativity needs to be seen up close. Please make sure to double-click these pictures to see a larger rendition and enjoy this to the fullest.
I notice that some yards are all produce or some plant that can supplement an income. Then other yards get full-on creative with beautiful landscaping. Land is prime here on an Island. What would you do? Make use of every square inch of property, or make your yard a place of beauty and relaxation?
The areas I covered today were mostly set on a ridgeline, and boy, what views! Just about every home had two levels that quarantied panoramic views. Their yards were not so great, as they focused their energy on lanais and patios to take advantage of the view. I covered 4.09 miles, and am finding out that I'm getting stronger with better endurance.
Here is an example of the views that most homes had. This is actually their garage. With a view like that, I would rather live there, than park a car there. Wouldn't you? Aloha ahiahi! (Good evening!)

Some fences are made to replicate fences in Japan. Here are a couple of homes who incorporated this method. I think that it makes a beautifal fence compared to most!
I know that Papaya is expensive, so, either they don't want to buy them to eat them, or, they sell them for a good profit. Of course, maybe they think that the Papaya plant is decorative!
As I passed by Moanalua Middle School, murals are the norm for most buildings. This mural is my favorite. The saying on the right, bottom area says, "Building Bridges for the Future." It looks like they started the bridge on the Earth and are building it to connect another world. I like that philosophy!
Good thing a brought a little money with me! I passed by a gentleman working with a lathe in his garage. I asked him what he was doing, and he said, "I'm making pens!" I'm sure that I looked confused since he was working with plastic. He then grabbed some finished samples of his plastic bodied pens. They looked very unique, and I asked if he sold them. "I usually give them away to family and friends as gifts," he replied. I told him that I would like to buy one, then he brought out some KOA wood pens in addition. I gave him all the money I had and I know that he should sell it for much more, but, he knew that was all I had. He still doesn't want to sell these as a business, because of the labor involved, so, it's just a hobby to him. I feel very blessed to have this very unique pen, that I can use refillable pen cartridges too!
These two pictures will help to explain something. Mauka (toward the mountain) of Lalamilo st, there is an un-named road. The second picture shows the entrance to it. It goes about 1/2 mile in and then dead-ends. I was going to walk it, but, got the "eeebie-jeebies" about it. Very deserted, road is not maintained, cars cannot go in there, as I was alone, I thought that my life is more important than a walk. So, I have made another decision. If the street or road doesn't have a name, I will not walk it. Too scary! My grand total for today is 2.18 miles. Aloha no! (Love, indeed!)
