Okay now, lets be smart!  If you are going to do something against the law, don't do it right next to the sign that tells you not to do it!  Shoot! You might as well secure it on the sign post, no?

My new area is Halawa.  The valley section is all industrial and the ridge line is residential, with a small Marine military base there too!  According to the walking application I use, today's jaunt was 2.24 miles only.  I'm thinking that I walked longer than that, and if there are overcast skies, the program does mess up.  But, I didn't do ANY backtracking at all and maybe that's why I got the low mileage number.  Anywho, I walked the area in yellow highlight marker!

At the very end of Iwaena Road, there is a Xeriscape Garden!  Owned by the Board of Water Supply, and open only on Saturdays, I never knew of it's existence!   I will come back on Saturday to check it out.  By the way, they also give away free mulch!

This store can organize your closet to maximize efficiency and beauty.  As I was taking a picture of the business, I inadvertently took my own picture too!   My bright yellow shirt was worn for a reason...
Because "The Walking Hawaiian" is C-R-A-Z-Y!  There were on-ramps and off-ramps to the freeway as part of my route.  Cars zipped by me and cars were zipping under me, getting me a little dizzy!  But, I know that they could see me!

Caw, Caw!  I think that they are crows or Myna birds!  What do you think?  They even put eyes in!  Also...
Are they going to put a "Drive-way" in, or is this notification for renters?  It doesn't look like a drive-way to me!

I'm not sure what language this is, but, it sure looks like a party to me!  Does anybody know what all the lanterns and the sign means?  Let me know!

Part of my route was walking through an condo complex and I just loved the landscaping.  Here is a sample of one of the pathways to get to your condo.  Breathtaking!  So sorry for the late blog!  My router went down while I was working on my blog and was down all evening. It got fixed today, so you should be getting 2 blogs on the same day! E kala mai!(I'm sorry!)

Resting precariously near the edge of the roof, I can only think, "MEAN BROTHER!"  I wonder if a little girl is looking for her doll?

I didn't think that I could complete the Ewa(west) side of the housing so quickly, but, trekking only 3.11 miles finished off the Navy Housing area and two pages of map are done!  Ya-hoo!  On to new areas tomorrow!

This is not "shadow play" on the color of the car.  The car is red on top and gradually turns to solid black on the bottom.  I'm not sure if car paint schemes are made this way now, or if the car owner had it done.  Nevertheless, two powerful colors make for a dramatic looking vehicle.
Displayed prominently on the front porch, I don't know if this is a science project or a homemade craft project.  Only two of the glasses have a plant in them, so, what happened to the others?

Besides the bold coloring of these hibiscus, I loved the lighter coloring on the edging and center of the blossom.  What a perfect match to the cooler behind it!  HaHa!

The kids must love this gate that gets them to Aliamanu Elementary and Aliamanu Middle School lickedy-split!  Only open during the school hours and locked on holidays, what a Godsend to the kids and the parents.

Nestled near the front door of a resident, this replica of a diver's helmet was almost life size and glossy.  Not really sure of the material it was made of, but, definitely a tribute to divers everywhere!  E malama pono!(Take good care!)

What is this?  I truly have no idea!  Even speculation has netted a big, fat zero!  Tell me if you know!  It was found above the garage door and not near a window.  ????

I'm starting to get better at filling up holes in my route.  It's like a puzzle, as I try to complete areas with the least amount of backtracking.  As you can see, one side of the housing is complete and 3.11 miles did the trick.  For the week total, 17.61 miles, and with the grand total of 240.55 miles, I feel a great sense of accomplishment.  If I can finish the other side of the Navy housing, two pages of map will be completed and done!

Obviously an "Olympics fan," as I hope you've been watching the skill and mental focus these athletes possess.  Did you know that the 5 rings are supposed to represent the 5 major continents and that the colors should be in the flags of all nations plus the white background?
Half the size of your thumb, this tiny, perfectly formed pineapple looked so cute.  Probably a menehune(small person) could enjoy its sweetness!  HaHa!

HECO (Hawaiian Electric Company) must be crying over the lost revenue with all these solar panels cutting the costs down substantially!  HaHa!  (I'm still crying since I live in a rental with no solar panels!)

The stunning color of this "Royal Poinciana," took a long time to photograph since the wind decided to howl just as I was ready to take the picture.  Patience is a virtue, and I was finally rewarded by capturing it's beauty.  Have a rewarding weekend everyone, and I'll be back on Monday! A Hui Hou!(Until we meet again!)

At first, I thought that this was a SHARK car, but because of the color, I think it's a ALLIGATOR car.(Or crocodile!)  It looks like they did it themselves, and not too shabby!  The undercoat of neon yellow helps you to see it from a distance.  I bet it'll never get stolen!  HaHa!

Today's route had me referring to my map constantly as I convoluted the Navy housing.  Weird looks, cars following me, and people not responding to my greetings was the norm which didn't make the trek any more inviting, but I got a lot done tallying 4.92 miles for the day.

Low fuel costs, RedBox, alcohol and food are offered here at the "Halsey Mini-mart!"  Cats are also welcome as I spied some cat food bowls with food in it near the bushes that line the street of the Mini-mart.
Walking the "Doris Miller" loop, I thought that it was a WOMAN.  But this loop is dedicated to the first African American to receive the "Navy Cross," for his bravery during the Pearl Harbor attack.  A Ship's cook, he shot at zeros, moved wounded sailors to safety and saved many lives in doing so.  Unfortunately, he was killed 2 years later in another battle which   sunk his ship in minutes.  He was never found.

Interesting set of plates here.  Can you identify the different flora on the plates?  Double click the picture to see up close!  Good luck!  E malama pono!(Take good care!)

Interesting use of the wrought iron wall hangings.  The design allows for air flow and the intricate design accents the otherwise empty space.

After finishing Hickam AFB, I was thinking of what next to conquer and I saw these few areas which is Navy Housing and if I do them, two pages of map would be completed and never to be used again.  Today's jaunt netted 3.01 miles in mostly straight lines and no backtracking.  I felt that it was easy and swift due to the uncomplicated path.

On a previous blog, I mentioned these fenced off areas and wondered if I would be seeing more of them.  Well, here are several more and I have lots to cover yet.  Told by a reliable source that an accident resulting in a death of a child in one of these drainage areas called for immediate safety precautions, so, the addition of these fences were put up in reaction to it.
I've been told to include some streets, since that is were I'm walking, so here is one of the major streets trekked.  I enjoyed looking at the ocean in the distance.  Double click to see the blue waters of the Pacific!

Vibrant red, this ginger variety called, "Indian Head Ginger," (Hey, I didn't make up the name!) begged for attention with the many bracts blooming.

I have to admit, most military homes bores me to tears, but this one was different.  Using yard ornaments, plants and wall hangings, it looked unique in a sea of uniformity.  Christopher, compliments his mom, who has won many "Yard of the Month,"and "Yard of the Quarter," housing awards in the many moves they made being in the military. Please double click and see the embellishments up close.  Chris was off to work as a waiter at the "Seven Palms" restaurant on Valkenburg.  He's cute, ladies, so give him a visit at the restaurant!

I remember when my children were young and I bought them these huge colored chalk and let them have at it drawing on the driveway.  Budding artists!  I loved their use of different colors on the same animal!  Let yourself be free of embarrassment and just do it for the experience!  Aloha!(Bye!)
Sometimes, being too close is not the best place to be!  I had hoped to get a really close view of the commercial airliner, and only ended seeing part of the wing and the tail.  Live and learn, my friends!
I wanted to show you how low the airplanes actually are.  So, compare the ground to the distance the plane is and remember that it is still descending as it moves.  Double click the picture to see the details.

Fences and planes were the menu for today.  These F-22's were parked near one of the fences that hindered my walk.

Two last sections needed to be completed and Hickam AFB is done!  Located furtherest east and makai(toward the ocean), this stretch was out in the boonies and thank goodness my daughter accompanied me.  I felt safer that I wasn't alone walking here.  The 3.11 miles finished the last of this base and walking it has made me feel more a part of it. Now I truly KNOW this area.

At the very end of one of the sections, the Hickam control tower resides.  Now if you are wondering why I'm taking a picture with all the bushes and trees in front of it, this is why...

This sign was very clear that there will be no vehicles, no bikes, no pedestrians and no cameras allowed in this area.  So, I took a picture of the sign!  Obstinate, yeah? Also, when I was out of range of the gate guard, I took the picture of the tower!  Hah!

Talking about signs, they were all over the place, making sure that I felt welcome walking here!  Double click the pictures and see what it says!  I was thinking that I hope I don't set off some explosive!

The "welcome" signs were on one side and the other side was the "Mamala Bay Golf Course."  As you can see, what a beautiful sight, compared to the other side of the road.

This kinda caught my attention.  I didn't see it anywhere else!  A bunch of white stones bolstering this strange shaped stick.  What do you think this is about?  Obviously put there by someone, but, what for?  If you have an idea, let me know!

As my daughter and I vigorously waved aloha (goodbye) to the planes passing by, I also say aloha (goodbye) to Hickam Air Force Base.  My journey continues elsewhere and I hope that you have learned a bit about its history and hope for continued progression here for the future!
